Consultancy on strategies to advance plant-based nutrition in healthcare in China

Framework: Consultancy work for The Good Food Fund China

Project Duration:     3 – 6 months

Location: Remote within China, with possibility of occasional travel within China as mutually agreed upon    

 About the Good Food Fund 

The Good Food Fund (GFF) is a subsidiary of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF). CBCGDF is one of the first national public foundations accredited by the central government. GFF was founded by Jian Yi in 2017. Jian Yi is an internationally acclaimed filmmaker, and a core leadership member of the Action Track 2 of the UN Food Systems Summit.

GFF’s vision is “One World, One Health”, its mission is to promote good food for healthy people, healthy animals and a healthy planet.

The Good Food Fund promotes a healthier and more sustainable food system by cultivating leadership, promoting evidence-based research, influencing organisations with a mission, and fostering an ecosystem and a social culture.

 About the program   

The Good Food Fund, together with partners, aims to launch a new program advancing whole food, plant-based nutrition in healthcare and empowering health professionals to create and support healthy and sustainable food environments throughout China.

Poor nutrition is the major contributor to the biggest health crisis of our time — the crisis of noncommunicable diseases. Additionally, the current food system produces mainly unhealthy foods, which also fuels climate change and the increasing (zoonotic) pandemic risk.

To mitigate or at best overcome these health crises and to alleviate the suffering of millions of people, we need to implement dietary approaches at the core of healthcare and create healthy, more whole food and plant-based food environments.

A transformation of this kind needs the full endorsement of the medical community to facilitate change within healthcare systems and to act as a powerful advisor for both the public and political decision-makers.

However, health professionals—and especially medical doctors themselves—are slow to acknowledge the power of diet to both prevent disease and treat existing diseases. Research shows that nutrition education in medical schools is rudimentary at best, and that medical doctors do not receive support to provide high-quality, effective nutrition care. Not surprisingly, the medical community and medical institutions rarely make effective efforts to shape respective food and health environments.

In a first step, the Good Food Fund asks either an individual consultant or an agency to evaluate potential strategies and programs on how to best connect and support (future) health professionals around whole food, plant-based nutrition.

 Project Deliverables Outline 

In cooperation with the Good Food Fund and its partners, the Physicians Association for Nutrition, and the Johns Hopkins Center for a Liveable Future  you will lay the groundwork for a successful program by evaluating potential networks, partners, strategies and projects in the field of nutrition in medicine. Based on this evaluation you will define an actionable strategic plan and propose work focus areas for the first two years including a proposal for optimal capacity building, potential first hires and budgeting of the program.

The Good Food Fund and Physicians Association for Nutrition will support you with their respective backgrounds and experience in the field of  nutrition in China and throughout the world. Good spoken and written English required.
